Changes Coming!!(and I have to take some time off)

Everyone,

I’ve got exciting changes and some new things coming up. The bad news is that I have to take a few days off from the Irish Pub Song Of The Day.

Keep sending your requests and I’ll will get to them in the order I received them.

Take Care and God Bless,

Kelly Griner

Happy Birthday to me!!

Today was a fantastic day. It’s just after midnight and I just finished a 10 hour jam with some of the best people I know. Bill, Colonel, Dr. Scott, Jim, Joel, Eric, Monica and Jim2 with his two daughters just left after one of the best jams I have ever been a part of. It was great having everyone over and it was great way to spend my birthday!

It was great singing all the old folk songs and hearing how good the Colonel is getting on the fiddle! I had a bast and everyone seemed to have fun. I can’t wait until the jam next month.

If any of you are in the area, we have an open jam once a month in the Chicago area and it’s open to any level player and anyone who just wants to play and have fun!

See you all Monday!!

Kelly

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – The Winds Are Singing Freedom

Friday’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is The Winds Are Singing Freedom. I loved this song from the first moment that I heard it. I hope that you all enjoy it as well. I usually sing it in the key of D, but once again I went for the key of G to help you all out  🙂

THE WINDS ARE SINGING FREEDOM(PDF)

THE WINDS ARE SINGING FREEDOM

In the [G]battered [D7]streets of [G]Belfast can’t you hear the [D7]people [G]cry?

For [C]justice [D7]long [G]denied [Em]them and their [C]crying [Am]fills the [D7]sky

But the [G]winds of [D7]change are [G]singing bringing hope from [D7]dark des[G]pair

There’s a [C]day of [D7]justice [G]com[Em]ing you can [C]feel it [D7]in the [G]air

And the winds are singing freedom they sing it everywhere
They sing it on the mountainside and in the city square
They sing of a new day dawning when our people will be free
Come and join their song of freedom let it ring from sea to sea

Too long our people suffered in their misery and their tears
And foreign rulers used our land for about eight hundred years
It’s a long road has no turning and I know that soon we’ll see
That day of justice dawning when our people will be free

There’s a time laid out for laughing there’s a time laid out to weep
There’s a time laid out for sowing and a time laid out to reap
There’s a time to love your brother there’s a time for hate to cease
You must sow the seeds of justice to reap the fruits of peace

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – As I Roved Out

It’s time for the 3 finger Am chord. This will take a dedicated pinky to pull off and I hope you don’t give up because today’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is As I Roved Out.

As I Roved Out(PDF)

As I Roved Out

[Bm]As I roved out on a May morning, on a May morning right early

I [D]met me love [A]upon the way, Oh [Bm]Lord, but [A]she was [Bm]early

And she sang [D]lilt-a-doodle lilt-a-doodle lilt-a-doodle-dee

And [A]she hi-da-land-da-dee and [D]she hi-da-land-da-dee and [Bm]she land-dae

Her boots were black and her stockings white and her buckles shone like silver
She had a dark and a rolling eye and her ear-rings tipped her shoulder

“What age are you, my bonnie wee lass? What age are you my honey?”
Modestly she answered me “I’ll be seventeen on Sunday”

“Where do you live, me bonnie wee lass? Where do you live me honey?”
“At a wee house up at the top of the hill, and I live there with me mammy”

“If I went to the house on the top of the hill when the moon was shining clearly
Would you arise and let me in and your mammy not to hear ye?”

I went to the house at the top of the hill when the moon was shining clearly
She arose to let me in, for her mammy chanced to hear her

She caught her by the hair of the head and down to the room she brought her
With the root of a hazel twig, she was the well-beat daughter

“Will you marry me now, me soldier lad? Will you marry me now or never?
Will you marry me now, me soldier lad, for you see I’m done forever?”

“I can’t marry you, my bonnie wee lass, I can’t marry you, my honey
For I have got a wife at home and how could I disown her?”

A pint at night is my delight and a gallon in the morning
The old women are my heartbreak, but the young one is me darling

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – Flower Of Scotland

It’s Wednesday and that means that today’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is in ¾ time or waltz time. Today’s song is Flower of Scotland. I love this song because it can either be a lament or defiant depending on how you play it.

FLOWER OF SCOTLAND

Oh Flower of [G]Scotland, when will we [D7]see your likes [G]again

That [C]fought and [G]died for your [D7]wee bit hill and [G]glen

And [D7]stood [G]against them, Proud [C]Edward’s [G]army

And [C]sent them [G]homeward to [F]think [G]again

The hills are bare now and autumn leaves lie thick and still
O’er land that is lost now which those so dearly held
That stood against him proud Edward’s army and sent him homeward to think again

Those days are past now and in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now and be the nation again
That stood against him proud Edward’s army and sent him homeward to think again.

Oh Flower of Scotland when will we see your like again
That fought and died for your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him proud Edward’s army
And sent him homeward to think again

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – Ramblin’ Rover

Today’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is Ramblin’ Rover.  I was asked once again about using the bodhran while singing so I decided to try out this old favorite.

Ramblin’ Rover

Oh, there’re sober men in plenty, And drunkards barely twenty,
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl.
But gie me a ramblin’ rover, and fae Orkney down to Dover.
We will roam the country over and together we’ll face the world.

There’s many that feign enjoyment from merciless employment,
Their ambition was this deployment from the minute they left the school.
And they save and scrape and ponder while the rest go out and squander,
See the world and rove and wander and are happier as a rule.

I’ve roamed through all the nations ta’en delight in all creation,
And I’ve tried a wee sensation where the company, did prove kind.
And when partin’ was no pleasure, I’ve drunk another measure
To the good friends that were treasure for they always are in our minds.

If you’re bent wi’ arth-i-ritis, Your bowels have got colitis,
You’ve gallopin’ with bollockitis and you’re thinkin’ it’s time you died,
If you been a man of action, though you’re lying there in traction,
You will get some satisfaction thinkin’, “Jesus, at least I tried.”

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – Legion Of The Rearguard

It’s Monday and time for The Irish Pub Song Of The Day. Today’s song is Legion Of The Rearguard. I usually play this song in the key of E since it lends itself well to the lower register. I thought I would be nice and play it in a key everyone could follow along with.

LEGION OF THE REARGUARD

[G]Up the Republic, they [D7]raise their battle cry

[C]Pearse and Mc[G]Dermott will [A]pray for you on [D7]high

[G]Eager and ready, for [D7]love of you they die

[C]Proud march the [G]Soldiers of the [D7]Rear[G]guard

Chorus:

[G]Legion [D7]of the [G]rearguard, [C]answering Ireland’s [G]call

[C]Hark, the marshal [G]tramp is heard from [A]Cork to Done[D7]gal

Wolfe [G]Tone and [D7]Emmett [G]guide you, [C]though your task be [G]hard

[C]DeValera [G]leads you, Soldiers of the Legion of the [D7]Rear[G]guard

Glorious the morning through flame and shot and shell
Now, rally Ireland, your sons who love you well
Pledged they’ll defend you, though death or prison cell
Wait for the Soldiers of the Rearguard

Crimson the roadside, the prison walls, the cave
Proof of their valor, go sleep in peace ye brave
Comrades tread lightly, you’re near a hero’s grave
Proud die the Soldiers of the Rearguard

Shell shattered fortress and shot scarred brigade
Trumpet the story of the glorious fight they made
Wearied, outnumbered, undaunted, unafraid
God bless the Soldiers of the Rearguard

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – A Place In The Choir

It’s Friday and today’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is A Place In The Choir. This is a great song to get
everyone singing along to. Once you sing the chorus, sing it again to get everyone singing along.

Remember that if you click on the link for the mp3 once, it will open the player or you can right click on the link to download it for you own use.

A Place In The Choir(PDF)

Place in the Choir

[G]All God’s creatures got a place in the choir,

[D]Some sing low, [G]some sing higher,

Some [C]sing out loud on the [G]telephone wire,

[D]Some just clap their [G]hands, or paws, or anything they got.

Listen to the bass, it’s the one on the bottom,
Where the bullfrog croaks and the hippopotomus
Moans and groans with a big to-do,
And the old cow just goes “moo”.

The dogs and the cats, they take up the middle,
Where the hummingbirds hum and the cricket fiddles,
The donkey brays and the pony neighs,
The old coyote howls.

{c:Chorus.}

Listen to the top where the birds sing
On the melody with the high notes ringin’,
While the hoot owl hollers over everything,
The jay bird disagrees.

Singin’ in the nighttime, singin’ in the day,
The little duck quacks and he’s on his way,
The opossum ain’t got much to say,
And the porcupine talks to himself.
{c:Chorus.}

It’s a simple song of livin’ sung everywhere,
By the ox, the fox, and the grizzly bear,
The grumpy alligator and the hawk above,
The sly raccoon and the turtle dove.

Irish Pub Song Of The Day – Red Is The Rose

Today’s Irish Pub Song Of The Day is Red Is The Rose. I love this song and the way that Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem took the melody of Loch Lomond and wrote beautiful words to create an entirely new song.

Remember that if you click on the mp3 link once it will open the player or you can right click on it and download the file for your own use.

Red Is The Rose

Come [G]over the [Em]hills, my [Am]bonny Irish [C]lass

Come [G]over the [Em]hills to your [G]dar[D7]ling;

[C]You choose the [G]rose, love, and I’ll [Am]make the [C]vow

And [G]I’ll be your [C]true [G]love for[D7]ev[G]er.

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
And fair is the lily of the valley;
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.

‘Twas down by Killarney’s green woods that we strayed
And the moon and the stars they were shining;
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she’d be my love forever.

It’s not for the parting tht my sister pains
It’s not for the grief of my mother,
“Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.

COME BY THE HILLS

[G]Come by the [C]hills to the [G]land where [C]fancy is [G]free

And stand where the [C]peaks meet the [G]sky and the [C]lochs meet the [D7]sea

Where the [G]rivers run clear and the [C]bracken is [G]gold in the [D7]sun

And the [G]cares of to-[C]morrow can [G]wait ’til [C]this day is [G]done

Oh, come by the hills to the land where life is a song
And sing while the birds fill the air with their joy all day long
Where the trees sway in time and even the wind sings in tune
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait ’til this day is done

Come by the hills to the land where legend re-mains
Where stories of old fill the heart and may yet come a-gain
Where our past has been lost and the future has still to be won
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait ’til this day is done
